Ben Gorham
Founder, Byredo
Ben Gorham (born July 5, 1977) is a Swedish entrepreneur, creative director, and the founder of the luxury fragrance and lifestyle brand Byredo. Born in Stockholm to an Indian mother and a Canadian father, he had a nomadic upbringing that spanned Sweden, Canada, and the United States. Before entering the beauty industry, Gorham was a competitive athlete who played professional basketball in Europe, a career he eventually left due to administrative immigration issues. He subsequently shifted his focus toward the arts, graduating with a degree in fine arts from the Stockholm Art School.
In 2006, despite having no formal training in perfumery, Gorham founded Byredo as a vehicle to translate personal memories into evocative scents. Functioning as a creative conductor rather than a traditional "nose," he collaborated with master perfumers like Jérôme Épinette to craft minimalist, gender-neutral fragrances such as Gypsy Water and Bal d'Afrique. Under his direction, the Stockholm-based label evolved from a niche fragrance house into a global luxury force, expanding seamlessly into cosmetics, leather goods, jewelry, and prominent cultural partnerships.
The brand's meteoric rise culminated in May 2022 when the Spanish fashion and beauty conglomerate Puig acquired full ownership of Byredo in a deal valuing the company at over €1 billion. Per the acquisition terms, Gorham committed to a three-year strategic agreement to retain creative leadership and guide the brand through its integration period. Following the completion of this transition, Gorham officially stepped down from Byredo in June 2025, handing full operational and creative control to Puig.
